Our Story

Founded in the 17th century, the Chateau Mont Thabor takes its name from a holy mountain in Galliee. Over its storied past, the Château has been at the crossroads of history with notable personalities meeting for religious, cultural and philosophical events, before becoming a vineyard renowned for Châteauneuf du Pape, Côtes-du-Rhône et Luberon wines.

Planting roots

In the 18th century, the Château was a well-known meeting place for important personalities of the time, including Dom Pernety, an enlightened thinker and alchemist from Avignon who made it his life’s mission to search for the Philosopher’s Stone. It was under his influence that the Château was named – taking inspiration from a tree planted directly from the holy mountain itself. Some of our wines today are inspired by his legacy.

Over the next decades, this land was part of several upheavals and revolutionary movements and also served as a stagecoach stop before becoming a farm in 1840 – the first step towards its future winemaking activities.

Sprouting leaves

In 1881, our ancestor Fritz Stehlein bought the property, intending to turn it into a profitable vineyard. He turned the carriage houses into wine cellars amongst other modifications, transforming the property into the ideal location to produce Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Spreading tendrils

In the 1940’s Luc Stehelin took over from his uncle and  planted new vines on the property, adding the Côtes-du-Rhône appellation to the production.

Growing grapes

In the 1970s, with Daniel Stehelin at the helm, the vineyard shifted from wholesale production to direct bottling and sales. A true wine connoisseur, Daniel decided to create wines that would reflect all of the rich history and personality of Mont Thabor. He was also the first generation to export the wines internationally.

Bearing fruits

Today, Fanny Stehelin, the 4th generation, has taken the reins of our production. Passionate about wine since her childhood days among the vines, Fanny learned traditional techniques from her father and explored new methods during her time abroad. Her husband, Vincent Brémond, opened new horizons for the Chateau by adding vineyards in the Luberon appellation to our portfolio.  Led first and foremost by their expertise and convictions, Fanny and Vincent continue to guide our production to greater heights, pursuing organic certification and using ecofriendy production methods.
